GETTING READY FOR THE FALL SPORTS SEASON
The cool temperature these last few days likely has many of you
looking forward to fall. This is one of my favorite times of the
year, when activity begins to pick up around campus. I hope
you’re looking forward to another year of Zips Athletics as
much as I am!
Our Football, Men's and Women's Soccer, and Volleyball teams each
are on campus and have their respective preseason training camps
well underway.
Two weeks from tonight our Football season kicks off in Orlando
when we take on UCF. The game, which starts at 7 p.m., is scheduled
to air on ESPN3. I have spent quite a bit of time out at practice
and like the excitement level and focus I see from our
student-athletes and coaches.
Our Women's Soccer team opens our sports calendar on Saturday with
an exhibition match at Duquesne at 1 p.m., and Men's Soccer hosts
Marshall on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for an exhibition. Volleyball begins
its season on Aug. 31 at a tournament at SIU-Edwardsville.
Be sure to check GoZips.com for preseason updates about each
team.
Season and single-game tickets as well as mini-plans are on sale,
and can be purchased online at ZipsTickets.com or by calling 1-888-99-AKRON
(25766).
FOOTBALL KICKOFF LUNCHEON
There is no better way for you to help us kick off the Football
season, than by attending our second-annual Football
Kickoff Luncheon on Friday, August 23 at noon at Quaker Station
in downtown Akron. Coach Bowden and others will address the crowd
to preview the 2013 season. Last year's luncheon was terrific and I
look forward to another festive event this year.
Seats, reserved tables of eight and sponsorship opportunities for
the event are still available and can be purchased by calling the
Athletics Ticket Office at 1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
MEN'S SOCCER PREVIEW EVENT
We hope you can join us tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at FirstEnergy
Stadium – Cub Cadet Field for
a free open to the public intrasquad scrimmage for Men's
Soccer. Following practice, first-year head coach Jared Embick
will hold a Q&A with the crowd.
Please be reminded that weekday home games in 2013 will start at 7
p.m. In recent season's those matches kicked off at 7:30 p.m.
Additionally, we recently changed the start time of our match
against San Diego State on Sunday, Sept. 15 to 1 p.m. That game is
part of our annual tournament. Also, our contest against Bowling
Green has been moved from Friday, Sept. 20 to Saturday, Sept. 21
and will start at 1 p.m.
CARR VERNON REPRESENTS ZIPS AT U.S. AMATEUR
GOLF
Zips sophomore golfer Carr Vernon advanced to the Round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur event this
week, and came up just short of a spot in the Round of 16
today, falling 2 UP to Australia's Oliver Goss. Carr trailed by
just one hole for a majority of the match against Goss, who is the
13th-ranked amateur in the world.
This is one of the most prestigious amateur events in the world
and the winner receives a variety of exemptions, including to the
U.S. Open, British Open and a likely invitation to the next
Masters.
We're proud of Carr and it was great to see his Zips golf bag
during the live coverage today on the Golf Channel.
MEN'S BASKETBALL SUMMER CLASSIC GOLF OUTING
If you are interested in getting out on the links yourself, a
limited amount of spots remain in our Men’s Basketball Golf Outing scheduled
for Monday at the Quarry Golf Club in Canton. The event features
both a morning and afternoon flight.
To sign up, please contact Anthony Henderson with our Z-Fund.
ZIPPY'S KIDS CLUB
As the new school year approaches, don't forget to sign up your
children for Zippy’s Kids Club, presented by North Akron
Savings Bank and exclusive for Zips fans ages 12 and under. It
costs just $20 and there is a discounted rate of $16 for children
of UA faculty and staff.
