Isaiah Johnson - Men's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio - Senior Center Isaiah Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio) was named the Zips' Student Athlete of the Week, presented by the University of Akron, on Jan. 9.
Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio) helped Akron extend the nation’s third longest home winning streak to 25 games at James A. Rhodes Arena by leading the Akron Zips to a 2-0 start in Mid-American Conference play with wins over Bowling Green (89-84) and Western Michigan (66-59).
Against Bowling Green, Johnson was Akron’s third leading scorer with 16 points, shooting 7-of-9 from the floor for a 77.8 field goal percentage. In 29 minutes of action, he notched a career-high eight assists to go along with eight rebounds. Johnson visited the free throw line four times and drilled two bonus buckets.
Against Western Michigan, Johnson turned in his third double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. He shot 60 percent from the floor, draining 6-of-10 shots while adding three assists, a block and a steal. He added four points from the charity stripe on eight attempts.
For the week, Johnson shot 68.4 percent from the field (13-of-19) en route to scoring 32 points (16 ppg). He pulled down 21 rebounds (10.5 rebs/g) and dished out 11 assists (5.5 ast/g) with a block and a steal. Johnson finished the week 6-of-12 from the free throw line.
This season, Johnson leads the Zips’ scoring efforts with 14.9 points per game, scoring double digits in 14-of-15 games including eight consecutive outings. He has scored 223 points to date and ranks No. 6 in the NCAA for field goal percentage at 66.2 percent. As a result, Johnson has nearly eclipsed the 1,000 point plateau, needing only one point (999) to be the Zips’ 42nd member and the 12th member under head coach Keith Dambrot to enter this elite club.
In addition, Johnson averages 7.3 rebounds per game, pulling down a team-high 109 rebounds with 67 defensive boards and 42 offensive rebounds. He owns a team-high 54 assists and 12 blocks with five steals. Johnson earned the Savannah Invitational MVP award, MAC East Player of the Week (11/28), College Sports Madness Player of the Week, and Sun Bowl All-Tournament team honors.
