CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team battled throughout Sunday afternoon but fell to Xavier, 3-1, at the Cintas Center. The Musketeers earned the four-set victory by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 25-18.
Akron, which entered the match at 5-6, finished with 49 kills, 43 assists and 56 digs. The Zips also hit .135 as a team and recorded four total blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Xavier took control early in the opening set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before Akron battled back. The Zips trimmed the deficit late, but the Musketeers closed out the frame, 25-19. Akron hit .111 with nine kills in the opening set.
Xavier carried its momentum into the second set, hitting .343 while Akron posted a .128 hitting percentage. The Zips recorded 12 kills in the frame but could not overcome the Musketeers' offensive attack as Xavier claimed a 25-16 victory.
Akron responded with its strongest offensive performance of the match in the third set. After falling behind early, the Zips rallied to take the lead and eventually secured a 25-23 victory. Akron recorded 16 kills against six errors on 44 attacks for a .227 hitting percentage.
Xavier answered in the fourth set, building an early 9-3 advantage. Akron battled back to pull within 11-10, but the Musketeers regained control and closed the match with a 25-18 victory.
