Five Zips Record Multiple Hits in 14-4 Win Over West Virginia Wesleyan

AKRON, Ohio - Five Zips recorded multiple hits highlighted by Brody Chrisman and Prince DeBoskie each collecting two extra base hits to help propel the Akron Zips over the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats 14-4 on Tuesday.
DeBoskie's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-3 day, and included a double, a triple, a walk and an RBI. Chrisman made his contribution with a double, a home run and two RBI, part of a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Austin Lafferty also helped out for the Zips, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and two RBI.
Landon Vandegrift (1-0) got the win for Akron (14-17). The right-hander went three shutout innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out five. Parker Munday also pitched well, going 1.2 innings, surrendering two runs, zero earned, without allowing a hit, walking two and striking out three. Garrett Groce threw 1.0 innings with one hit, one run and three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Akron scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Henry Hayman.
The Zips then held the Bobcats scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Akron pushed across a run on DeBoskie's two-out RBI double, which brought the Zips lead to 4-0.
Akron held West Virginia Wesleyan scoreless before building their lead to 7-0 the following inning. The Zips recorded three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run homer from Lafferty.
The Bobcats gained ground, closing the gap to 7-3 until Akron added some insurance in the fifth. The Zips scored six runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Chrisman and a two-run single from Kelton Phillips, bringing the score to 13-3 in favor of Akron.
West Virginia Wesleyan got within 13-4 until the Zips scored again in the sixth inning to stretch its lead to 14-4. Kyle McConachie came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board. The score remained 14-4 for the rest of the game, as the Zips coasted to the win.
