Zips Earn Four Titles on Opening Day of MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The University of Akron track and field team garnered four individual titles on the opening day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Central Michigan on Friday (Feb. 27). The Zips posted 13 performances that resulted in team points for Akron.
Entering final day competition on Saturday (Feb. 28), the Zips lead the men's team race by 12 points over rival Kent State, while the Akron women's squad trails the Golden Flashes by five points for the team title.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Redshirt senior Brook Boes (Tiffin, Ohio) won her first career league title besting the field in the women's weight throw with a career-best mark of 68-4.50 (20.84m), the No. 4 mark in indoor program history.
• Redshirt sophomore Jeffrey Usman (Warri, Nigeria) earned his first-ever league championship soaring 24-1.75 (7.36m) on his final attempt to win the men's long jump.
• Redshirt senior Lane Graham (Killbuck, Ohio) took his first conference title winning the men's weight throw with a career-best mark of 68-3.25 (20.81m), the No. 2 mark in indoor program history.
• Freshman Noah Nyageo (Kitale, Kenya) added his first career league championship besting the field in the men's 5,000 meters in a time of 14:17.13.
• Redshirt senior Gabrielle Griffiths (Fort Worth, Texas) earned Second-Team All-MAC honors with a runner-up finish in the women's weight throw with a career-best mark of 62-3.25 (18.98m).
• Junior Megan Hipple (Warren, Ohio) collected Second-Team All-MAC accolades for the first time crossing the line second in the women's 5,000 meters in a time of 16:03.86.
