SCOUTING KENT STATE
Kent State enters play versus Akron on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 12-13 on the campaign, including 6-7 in the Mid-American Conference, following a 70-67 victory over Northern Illinois on Wednesday (Feb. 18).

Junior Mya Babbitt is averaging a team-best 16.5 points per game for the Golden Flashes, while junior Riley Rismiller is pulling down a team-high 5.8 rebounds per contest. As a team, Kent State is recording 70.5 points, 39.0 rebounds, 14.1 assists, 8.2 steals and 2.4 blocks per tilt.

As a unit, the Golden Flashes rated 14th in the NCAA in free throws made (15.92), 19th in free throw percentage (.776) and 41st in free throw attempts (20.52). Individually, Babbitt is 26th in free throw percentage (.878) and 31st in three-point attempts (193), while senior Dionna Gray is 29th in assists per game (5.3) and 37th in total assists (133).

SERIES HISTORY
Akron and Kent State are meeting for the 83rd in program history with the Golden Flashes leading the series by a 64-18 margin. The Golden Flashes posted an 91-79 triumph on Jan. 17 in Kent, Ohio.

IN OUR LAST MEETING (JAN. 17, 2026 – KENT, OHIO)
Akron sophomore Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) scored 22 points, but the Zips fell to Kent State, 91-79, on the road on Jan. 17.

Clark added six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks to her 22-point game to lead the Zips. Freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.) helped out with 13 points and three steals, and freshman Corinne Reed (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in with eight points and two steals.

Junior Keiryn McGuff (Dublin, Ohio) pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Akron, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 22 second-chance points.

Akron forced 17 Kent State turnovers turning those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Brew's three steals led the way for Akron.

ZIPS TRIUMPH OVER BOBCATS IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
Keiryn McGuff put Akron ahead for good on a basket with 13 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Zips a 108-105 win over Ohio at James A. Rhodes Arena on Wednesday (Feb. 18).

The Zips overcame a 13-point third-quarter deficit to secure its second consecutive victory, both in overtime.

Akron connected on a school-record 20 three pointers in the contest with sophomore Liz Murphy (Yackandandah, Australia), sophomore Izzy Callaway (Copley, Ohio) and McGuff draining six, five and four triples, respectively. The Zips bested the previous mark of 16 set against Ohio on March 5, 2018.

The Zips had five players score in double figures, led by McGuff, who put together a double-double with career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. Murphy tacked on a career-high 20 points and Callaway helped out with 19 points off the bench. Ni'Rah Clark contributed a 17-point and seven-rebound performance.

McGuff and Shaena Brew each posted their second career double-doubles with Brew collecting 18 points to go along with a career-high 12 assists. Brew's assist total was one shy of the single-game school record for assists set by Kacie Cassell versus Miami on Feb. 26, 2014.

Led by McGuff's four offensive rebounds, Akron did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 13 second-chance points.

The Akron defense was effective at taking away the basketball forcing 17 Ohio turnovers turning those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Freshman Monique Mitchell (South Bend, Ind.) led the way individually for the Zips with one steal.

AKRON RALLIES PAST NORTHERN ILLINOIS IN OVERTIME
Ni'Rah Clark put Akron ahead for good with 2:43 to go in overtime to give the Zips a 75-68 win over Northern Illinois on Feb. 14 in DeKalb, Ill.

The Zips had three players score in double figures, led by Clark, who had 21 points. Senior Natalie Johnson (Waldorf, Md.) tacked on an Akron career-best 18 points to go along with two steals off the bench, while Monique Mitchell chipped in as well with 10 points and two steals. Corinne Reed added a nine-point and seven-rebound effort for the Zips.

Keiryn McGuff pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Akron, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 16 second chance points.

Akron's defense held Northern Illinois to only 39.3 percent shooting from the field. The Huskies did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with seven offensive rebounds and managed seven second-chance points while Akron cleared 28 defensive rebounds.

ZIPS TO HONOR AKRON GREAT RACHEL TECCA
Akron women's basketball all-time great Rachel Tecca will have her No. 32 jersey number honored on Saturday (Feb. 21), prior to the Zips' showdown with rival Kent State.

Tecca, No. 32, is the third player in program history to have her jersey number honored, joining the likes of No. 22 Pam Arnold and No. 24 Cheryl Bowles

Tecca represented the Blue and Gold from 2009-14, appearing in 138 games, including 108 as a starter. The Zips registered a 92-68 overall record and a 50-32 mark in the Mid-American Conference, while winning a regular season MAC Eastern Division Championship (2012-13) and MAC Tournament Championship (2013-14), participating in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, which stands as the only appearance in program history. During her career, Tecca amassed 2,317 points, 1,109 rebounds, 189 assists, 183 steals and 75 blocked shots.

Tecca was the fourth player in Akron basketball history to earn All-America honors (2013-14) and added several accolades, including being tabbed the MAC Player of the Year (2012-13), MAC Sixth Player of the Year (2009-10), a three-time First-Team All-MAC selection, MAC All-Freshman Team (2009-10) honoree, two-time MAC All-Tournament Team recipient and MAC Tournament MVP (2013-14).

JONES SELECTED TO WBCA NEXT GENERATION INSTITUTE
Akron women's basketball assistant coach Sarah Jones was among a select group of coaches selected to participate in the 2026 Women's Basketball Coaches Association Next Generation Institute.

Now in its fourth year, the Institute is a high-level education program for experienced assistant coaches who aspire to become collegiate head coach. The curriculum of the WBCA Next Generation Institute focuses on the CEO attributes needed to lead a program and be a problem-solver in today's ever-changing landscape of higher education and the enterprise of intercollegiate athletics. The Institute is held in conjunction with the WBCA Convention, which this year takes place April 2-5 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Shaena Brew, Ni'Rah Clark, Keiryn McGuff and Monique Mitchell lead Akron over the last five games averaging a 16.2, 16.0, 10.4 and 10.4 points per contest, respectively. McGuff is pulling down a team-best 7.2 rebounds, while Clark is shooting a team-high 58.1 percent from the field.

• Akron posted seven career-high marks at Ohio (Jan. 3), including a then career-best 14-point effort from Corinne Reed, while also equaling a career- and season-high five assists.
• The Zips shot a season-best 58.8 percent from the field versus Le Moyne (Dec. 21), including shooting 75 percent in the third quarter on 9-of-12 shooting.
• The Zips netted six career-best marks against Le Moyne (Dec. 21).
