NEW YORK, N.Y. — Matthew Paiva has notched BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors, while goalkeeper Brett Kaminski has earned a spot on the conference's Weekly Honor Roll.
Paiva helped the Zips earn a pair of results against nationally ranked opponents, as the Zips defeated No. 25 Syracuse, 2-1, before battling No. 6 Creighton to a 1-1 draw. The senior anchored an Akron back line that surrendered just two goals across 180 minutes and helped hold Creighton, the nation's top-scoring offense, to one goal despite the Zips playing with 10 men for the majority of the second half. Paiva also converted the game-tying penalty kick against the Bluejays.
Kaminski totaled nine saves during the two-game stretch. He stopped a penalty kick among his three second-half saves in the victory over Syracuse before recording a career-high six saves against Creighton.
Paiva is the third different Zip to earn a BIG EAST Player of the Week distinction. Remi Agunbiade notched Offensive Player of the Week on October 5, while Kaminski was Goalkeeper of the Week back on September 14.
Akron will be back in action on Friday, October 16 as they travel to Providence. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
