Akron Set for Trio of Weekend Meets

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field team returns to competition at a trio of weekend meets this Friday (Jan. 30) and Saturday (Jan. 31), including the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame, Penn State National and the Youngstown State Mid-Major Invitational.

WENDL EARNS MAC WEEKLY HONORS:
Redshirt senior Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) was recognized by the Mid-American Conference as its men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday (Jan. 27).
Wendl captured first place in the men's shot put at the Jud Logan Memorial with a career-best throw of 59-4.25 (18.09m). His mark is the third-longest indoor throw in program history and currently ranks first in the MAC and 35th nationally.
LAST TIME OUT:
The University of Akron track and field team registered three victories as part of 16 overall top three performances at the Jud Logan Memorial hosted by Kent State on Friday (Jan. 23).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Owen Wendl captured the men's shot put with a career-best throw of 59-4.25 (18.09m), the third-longest mark in indoor program history.
• Redshirt senior Gabrielle Griffiths (Fort Worth, Texas) won the women's shot put with a mark of 44-10.25 (13.67m).
• Sophomore Mariyah Moore (Cleveland, Ohio) bested the field in the women's 200 meters in a career-best time of 24.95.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams has garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2026 indoor season as the Zips are rated among the Top 30 in the Event Squad rankings for nine events released on Jan. 27, 2026, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron is rated 10th nationally in the men's pole vault and shot put, 11th in the women's pole vault, 12th in the women's shot put, 14th for women's weight throw, 21st in the men's 800 meters, 24th for women's triple jump, 25th in the men's weight throw and 26th for women's 5,000 meters.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2026 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has seven individual student-athletes ranked in the Top 50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) for the 2026 indoor campaign as redshirt senior Cassidy Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) is ninth in the women's pole vault (14-1.75/4.31m).
Additionally, junior AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) is 28th in the men's 200 meters (21.12), redshirt senior Brook Boes (Tiffin, Ohio) is 30th in the women's weight throw (65-0.75/19.83m) and 33rd in the women's shot put (52-2.75/15.92m), Owen Wendl is 35th in the men's shot put (59-4.25/18.09m), sophomore Isaac Baltic (Medina, Ohio) is 38th in the men's pole vault (17-0.75/5.20m), senior Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) is 48th in the women's 400 meters (54.31) and sophomore Kaden Rambatt (Sharon, Wis.) is 49th in the men's pole vault (16-11/5.16m).
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips have added eight overall top five performances and one school record in program history to the record book during the 2026 indoor campaign.
