AKRON, OH -- The Akron Zips volleyball team swept the Cleveland State Vikings 3-0 by scores of 25-9, 28-26, and 25-22 on Friday night at home at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Zips offense was paced by Delaney Gash, who finished with 14 kills with a .303 hitting percentage. Maureen Mathews followed with 11 kills, while Vanessa Del Real led the defensive charge with12 digs. The Zips recorded six blocks as Chidera Ozoh led the charge with four block assists and Martina Villani followed with three. Mathews added a solo block.
The out-of-conference victory improved Akron's overall record to 7-4 on the season.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips took control of the set-one lead at 6-5 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-9. Akron opened up its biggest lead, 16 points, to finish off the set. Akron also supplemented their offense with five aces in the opening set. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Cleveland State attacks in the stanza and capitalized on 10 Cleveland State attacking errors on the way to victory.
SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Akron put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 28-26 victory in set number two. The Zips came out on top of a tight second set, winning in a stanza that was tied six times and had three lead changes. The Zips racked up 18 kills over the course of the set.
SET 3 | Akron then sealed the sweep with a victory in set number three. The Zips survived a back-and-forth set to win 25-22 in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied nine times. Neither team opened up a lead of more than three points along the way.
