ATHENS, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field team garnered a pair of league titles on the second day of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship hosted by Ohio at Goldsberry Track on Friday (May 16).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Redshirt junior Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) captured his third league title besting the field in the men's shot put with a career-best throw of 60-2.50 (18.35m), the second-best performance in outdoor program history.
• Freshman Bismack Kipchirchir (Eldama Ravine, Kenya) won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 8:45.34 to earn his first career league title.
• Netting team points with third- and fourth-place efforts in the men's shot put with marks of 56-11.25 (17.35m) and 56-3.75 (17.16m), respectively, was redshirt senior Keegan Digby (Bowling Green, Ohio) and junior Josiah Cox (New Franklin, Ohio).
• Redshirt senior Brook Boes (Tiffin, Ohio) placed fifth in the women's shot put with a season-best mark of 47-5 (14.45m).
• Freshman Rukia Omulisia (Nairobi, Kenya) advanced to the finals of the women's 100-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 13.31.
• Sophomore Cameron Corrothers (Maple Heights, Ohio) qualified for the finals in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 14.80.
• Sophomores AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) and Braylyn Farrington (Alabaster, Ala.) moved into the finals of the men's 400 meters crossing the line in 47.59 and 48.29, respectively.
• Junior Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) garnered a qualifying time of 55.73 in the women's 400 meters.
• Senior Joy Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) punched her ticket to the finals in the women's 100 meters with a career-best time of 11.51, the fourth-fastest effort in outdoor program history.
• Jordan and sophomore Rennie Gittens, Jr. (Miami, Fla.) advanced to the finals of the men's 100 meters with times of 10.37 and 10.38.
• Sophomore Majid Abuaun (Rocky River, Ohio) qualified for the finals in the men's 800 meters with a career-best time of 1:52.39.
