AKRON, Ohio -Â The 14th-seeded and eighth-rated University of Akron men's soccer team was unable to overcome playing a man down over the final 27:36 of regulation and No. 6 Saint Louis netted a pair of goals down the stretch to record a come-from-behind 3-2 triumph past the Zips in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday (Dec. 6) at FirstEnergy Stadium.
How it Happened
Akron grabbed a 1-0 lead when sophomore Jack Roman (Canfield, Ohio) recorded his sixth goal of the season in the fourth minute (3:05), assisted by seniors Stefan Dobrijevic (Uniontown, Ohio) and Ashton Kamdem (West Chester, Ohio).
The Zips increased their lead to 2-0 on a goal from junior Matt Dreas (Covington, Ky.), his first goal of the season, at the 37:46 mark, assisted by redshirt sophomore Tyler Morck (Bethpage, N.Y.).
Saint Louis got on the scoreboard to make it a 2-1 match in 50th-minute own goal.
The Zips where whistled for a red card after VAR review at the 62:24 mark and played the remainder of the contest a man down.
The Billikens rallied to net the equalizer with a 78th-minute penalty kick goal (77:58) from Quinten Blair.
Saint Louis broke the tie and took a 3-2 lead on Tanner Anderson's tally at the 86:59 mark, assisted by Andrew Heckenlaible and Jack Dimaria. .
Game Notes
- Redshirt senior GK Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) capped his All-America Akron career totaling four saves for the Zips out of 17 total Billikens' shots.
- Akron totaled four shots on goal, with Roman posting a team-high two shots.
- The contest marked the final games in the decorated Akron careers for seniors Daragh Reilly (Navan, Ireland), Budler, Dobrijevvic and Kamdem.
