Callaway Sets Career High to Fuel Akron past Heidelberg, 117-34

AKRON, Ohio - Sophomore Izzy Callaway registered a career-high 36 points while the Akron defense held Heidelberg to just 15.6 percent shooting from the field as the Zips defeated the Berg 117-34 on Education Day at James A. Rhodes Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
Callaway shot 76.5 percent (13 of 17) from the field, including an 72.7 percent (8 of 11) effort from downtown and a perfect 2 of 2 from the free throw line en route to the career-high performance. The last Zip to have a 36-point performance was Anita Brown in 2015 in a 102-101 win over Toledo on Jan. 14, 2015.
The Zips (1-7) had five players score in double figures as Callaway led te way followed by freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.) who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Liz Murphy added 16 points and two steals from the bench. Rounding out the double digit scores were senior Natalie Johnson (Waldorf, Md.) and freshman Monique Mitchell (South Bend, Ind.) with 13 points each. Mitchell added eight rebounds and Johnson collected six.Â
Akron collected 47 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Heidelberg's 25, led by Brew's 10 boards. The Zips also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 14 second chance points.
Akron's defense held Heidelberg to only 15 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 15.6 percent from the field. The Zips also limited Malia Mizeres to 1-of-11 shooting from downtown and nine points. The Berg finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed two second chance points while Akron cleared 30 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Akron went on a 14-0 run with 9:15 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Monique Mitchell, to take a 16-2 lead. The Zips then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 28-10 advantage. Akron did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 28 points close to the basket.
Akron kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 19-0 run starting at the 9:51 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Mitchell, to increase its lead to 47-10. The Zips proceeded to tack on nine points to that lead and enjoyed a 60-14 advantage heading into halftime. Akron dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 32 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Akron continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 71-21 before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Callaway, to expand its lead further to 80-21 with 2:18 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Zips added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 86-25 edge. Akron knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 26 total points.
Akron kept widening that lead, expanding it to 103-34 before going on a 14-0 run, finished off by Natalie Johnson's layup, to grow the lead to 117-34 with 30 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 31 points in the paint.
