Akron Drops 2-1 Decision to Connecticut in BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals

BOYDS, Md. – The 14th-rated University of Akron men's soccer team was unable to solve Connecticut for a second time this season as the Huskies rallied with a pair of second-half goals to stun the second-seeded Zips in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Tournament on Thursday (Nov. 13) at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
Akron, who came in the match rated No. 9 in the latest NCAA RPI report, will await the NCAA Tournament Selection special on Monday (Nov. 17) at 1 p.m. to learn their tournament fate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two sides battled through a scoreless opening half in which the Zips posted a 5-1 advantage in shots, including 2-1 on goal.
Akron assumed a 1-0 lead at the 48:16 mark when redshirt freshman Thomas O'Rourke (East Patchogue, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the second consecutive game off assists from sophomore Jack Roman (Canfield, Ohio) and senior Stefan Dobrijevic (Uniontown, Ohio).
The Huskies netted the equalizer in the 60th minute (59:02) on a tally from Austin Brummett.
Preston Alessio connected on what proved to be the game-winner at the 70:40 mark to advance the Huskies to Sunday's title match.
GAME NOTES
• The Zips registered an 11-8 advantage in shots, including 5-4 on goal.
• O'Rourke posted a team-high three shots with a pair falling on frame.
• Dobrijevic and Roman each collected a pair of shots for Akron.
• Redshirt senior GK Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) pulled in a pair of saves for Akron
