Gash and Villani's Double-Doubles Power Zips To Win At Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY - Led by double-doubles from Delaney Gash (24 kills, 12 digs) and Martina Villani (39 assists, 12 digs), the Akron volleyball team took down the Buffalo Bulls 3-2 (25-19, 10-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-10) Tuesday at Alumni Arena.
The Zips were led on offense by a double-double from Gash, who registered 24 kills and 12 digs on the day. Gabby Brissett added nine kills while Ruby Klusman added a career-high seven kills and a career-high five digs in the win. On the defensive end, Villani and Gash led the Zips with 12 digs, while Vanessa Del Real recorded 11 digs. Chidera Ozoh and Villani added three blocks each while Viillani recorded 39 assists .
The win improved the Zips' record to 12-11 overall and 5-7 in MAC play.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips took the first set 25-19 thanks to a solid showing on the attacking end. Akron registered a .304 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set victory. The Zips rallied from down six at 7-1 to grab the win. Akron also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | Akron dropped the second set 25-10 to even the match 1-1. The Zips lost the first point and never clawed back into the lead before dropping the set.
SET 3 | Akron then dropped their second set in a row, falling behind in the match two sets to one. The Zips came up short by the score of 25-21. Buffalo grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that was tied up two times before the Bulls took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 4 | Akron broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 25-19 victory in set number four. The Zips took control of the set at 2-1 and never looked back. Akron led by as many as six points at 21-15 before closing out the stanza.
SET 5 | Akron rebounded from a 2-1 set deficit to win the next two sets, culminating in a 15-10 fifth-set victory, and take the 3-2 win. The Zips took control of the set-five lead at 2-1 and held it the rest of the way. Akron led by as many as seven points at 9-2 before closing out the set.

Akron returns to James A. Rhodes Arena to host Eastern Michigan on October 31 and November 1.
