AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) scored 22 points, but the Zips dropped a 72-63 decision to Ohio in the squad's home finale on Wednesday (March 6) at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Bass added eight rebounds to her 22 point game to lead the Zips. Redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) collected her first career double double with a 13-point and career-high 12-rebound performance. Junior Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind.) chipped in with 11 points, five assists and four steals, while freshman Teniesha Clarke (Burlington, Ontario) added 11 points.
Akron utilized excellent ball movement in Wednesday's game, piling up 17 assists on 22 made field goals. Rasheed's five assists led the distribution list for the Zips.
Akron forced 19 Ohio turnovers and turned those takeaways into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Rasheed's four steals led the way for Akron.
How It Happened
Akron fell behind early and trailed 15-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Ohio built a 25-9 advantage before Akron went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a three from Rasheed, to narrow its deficit to 25-17. The Zips continued to chip away, reducing the Ohio lead to 29-26 heading into the break.
After intermission, Akron cut its deficit to 33-31 before going on a 5-0 run to grab a 36-33 lead with 7:26 to go in the third. Ohio responded to seize a 53-43 lead entering the fourth quarter. Akron took advantage of three Ohio turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
Akron narrowed its deficit in the fourth quarter, but could not get over the hump, losing 72-63. Akron fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 20 points.
