Enrique Freeman Named Finalist for the 2023-24 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award
March 20 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON, Mass. -Â The awards keep coming in for Enrique Freeman as he was named a finalist for the 2023-24 Lou Henson National Player of the Year award on March 20.
The award is presented annually to the top player in mid-major college basketball. Â
This comes on the heels of being named to the Associated Press All-America Team on Tuesday, March 19 as an Honorable Mention.
Freeman is averaging 18.6 points, 12.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 0.8 steals per game in addition to 60 total blocks.
He became the all-time leader in rebounds this season along with being No. 2 in career blocks, and No. 3 in all-time scoring. He is also one double-double away from tying the NCAA single-season record of 31 set by David Robinson from Navy in 1986.
The Lou Henson award honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.
Henson, who is also the all-time winningest coach in New Mexico State history with 289 victories, is one of only 11 coaches to take two different schools to the NCAA Final Four. His teams have made 19 NCAA appearances and four NIT appearances.Â
The recipient of the annual award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches, as well as two senior staff members of collegeinsider.com. Â
The 2024 award will be announced in Phoenix, AZ, site of the men's Division I Basketball.
