Akron Triumphs 69-54 Over Northern Illinois on Senior Day

AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) notched a double-double with a 25-point and 11-rebound performance to help the Zips to a 69-54 victory on Senior Day over Northern Illinois on Saturday (March 2) at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Zips had three players score in double figures, led by Bass, who had her 14th double-double of the season with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) added 15 points, six rebounds and five assists, while freshman Teniesha Clarke (Burlington, Ontario) chipped in as well with 11 points and six rebounds.
The Zips honored senior Haney, Alexis Stewart (Hamilton, Ontario) and Tahmala Thorpe (Mississauga, Ontario) in pregame Senior Day ceremonies.
With her final rebound of the contest, Bass collected her 659th career rebound to move into the top-10 in program history in rebounding.
Akron did a stellar job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 18 assists while turning the ball over a season-low eight times. Haney's five assists paced the Zips.
Akron did a great job disrupting Northern Illinois shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Bass' four rejections led the way individually for the Zips.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 13-10 advantage, Akron went on a 5-0 run with 4:06 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Haney, to increase its lead to 18-10. The Zips entered the quarter break with a 24-18 advantage. Akron did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 24 points close to the basket.
The Zips maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 38-32 edge. Akron dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
Akron continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Bass, to expand its lead further to 50-36 with 5:28 to go in the third. The Zips entered the fourth quarter with a 56-44 edge. Akron knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 18 total points.
Akron kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 62-46 with 4:09 to go in the contest. Akron took advantage of five Northern Illinois turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
