Akron Takes Down Eastern Michigan, 68-67, in Overtime

YPSILANTI, Mich. - University of Akron freshman Teniesha Clarke (Burlington, Ontario) knocked down a game-tying shot with 18 seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime and junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) put the Zips ahead for good with five seconds to go the extra period to give Akron a 68-67 win over Eastern Michigan on the road on Wednesday (Feb. 7).
The Zips had three players score in double figures, led by Bass, who had 19 points. Redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) added 12 points and four assists and junior Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind.) chipped in as well with 11 points.
The Akron offense was very productive from downtown, knocking down eight threes on 22 attempts. Rasheed was the most prolific shooter for the Zips, draining three treys in the contest.
Akron forced 16 Eastern Michigan turnovers and turned those takeaways into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Clarke's two steals led the way for Akron.
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-7, Akron went on a 5-0 run with 2:00 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from junior Kaia Woods (Tiffin, Ohio), to narrow its deficit to 14-12. Eastern Michigan answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Zips down 19-14 entering the second quarter.
Akron started off the second quarter by going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three from Rasheed, to take a 21-19 lead. The Eagles then came roaring back to take a 30-29 lead heading into halftime.
Eastern Michigan continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 45-35 advantage before Akron went on a 9-0 run to trim its deficit to 45-44 with 17 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the stanza. Akron played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
Eastern Michigan kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 51-46 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run, finished off by junior Alexus Mobley's (Indianapolis, Ind.) three, to even the score at 51 all with 4:58 to go in the fourth. Neither team was able to finish the game in regulation and the contest headed to overtime tied at 56-56. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.
Akron started overtime with a bang, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by sophomore Lanae Riley's (Akron, Ohio) three, to seize a 61-56 lead with 4:17 to go in the period. The Eagles narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Zips still held on for the 68-67 win.
