MUNCIE, Ind. - The University of Akron had two players score in double figures led by a 12-point and six-rebound effort from junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio), but a stout defensive performance from Ball State propelled the Cardinals to a 75-41 victory on Wednesday (Feb. 28).
Joining Bass with a double-figure scoring performance was redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio), who tacked on 11 points. In a return to her home state, junior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) added two points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Akron's defense forced 15 Ball State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into six points on the other end of the floor. Mobley's two steals led the way individually for the Zips.
How It Happened
Akron fell behind 19-9 at the end of the first quarter and faced a 37-19 halftime deficit.
Akron's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Zips trailed 56-27 heading to the fourth quarter. Akron played well near the basket, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
Ball State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-29 advantage before Akron went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Mobley's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 61-35 with 7:34 to go in the contest. Ball State responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 75-41. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint.
