Akron Falls Short in Rivalry Game

KENT, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball team fell short in a 73-51 loss to Kent State on the road Saturday (Feb. 24).
Akron junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds on the way to entering the Zips all-time scoring list, currently ranking 10th in Akron women's basketball history.
Senior Alexis Stewart (Hamilton, Ontario) and freshman Teniesha Clarke (Burlington, Ontario) led the Zips' offensive efforts with nine points each. Stewart buried 3-of-4 shots from beyond the arc and snagged a rebound, while Clarke went 4-of-8 from the field and 1-of-2 from deep with three assists, one block and a rebound.Â
How It Happened
Akron struggled out of the gate, falling behind 22-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Kent State kept adding to that lead, building a 27-11 advantage before Akron went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio), to narrow its deficit to 27-17. The Zips continued to chip away, reducing the Kent State lead to 39-30 heading into the break.
Akron's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Zips faced a 55-39 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Akron knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its nine total points.
Akron could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 73-51. Akron fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
