Hard-Fought MAC Battle Falls in Favor of Bowling Green, 74-68

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 74-68 Mid-American Conference decision to Bowling Green on Wednesday (Feb. 21) at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Zips had two players score in double figures, led by sophomore Lanae Riley (Akron, Ohio), who had a 17-point performance. Redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) added 11 points and five assists, while junior Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ohio) chipped in nine points and a career-high six assists.
Akron knocked down 12-of-25 attempts from three-point range, shooting 48 percent from deep.
Junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Akron, grabbing 14 boards and turning them into nine second-chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-0, Akron went on a 7-0 run with 7:39 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Bass, to take a 7-6 lead. The Zips then saw Bowling Green regain the lead and entered the second quarter down 21-14.
The Falcons extended their margin building a 33-25 advantage before Akron went on a 6-0 run to narrow its deficit to 33-31. Bowling Green responded and entered the intermission leading 36-33.
The Falcons continued to increase thier lead after halftime, building a 50-40 margin before Akron went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from senior Alexis Stewart (Hamilton, Ontario), to trim its deficit to 50-46 with 4:29 to go in the third. The Zips continued to reduce the Bowling Green lead, shrinking it to 59-57 by the end of the third quarter. Akron took advantage of five Falcons' turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of takeaways.
Bowling Green constructed a 65-60 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Riley's three, to even the score at 65 all with 5:18 to go in the contest. The Zips could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Falcons outscored them 9-3 the rest of the way to hand Akron the 74-68 loss. The Zips fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 11 points.
