Jaaskelainen Named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week

NEW YORK - University of Akron men's soccer redshirt senior Emil Jaaskelainen (Bolton, England) was honored by the BIG EAST Conference as its Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday, Oct. 14.

Jaaskelainen continued his stellar campaign a week ago registering five goals, including a first-half hat trick in a 3-2 victory over Villanova on Saturday (Oct. 12), to help the Zips extend their winning streak to six straight.

He opened his week recording his fourth multi-goal game of the year netting a pair of tallies in a 6-1 victory past Wright State on Tuesday (Oct. 8). Jaaskelainen gave the Zips a 1-0 halftime lead over the Raiders notching his 10th goal of the year at the 12:57 mark, before capping his night finding the back of the net in the 71st minute (70:14). He finished the night recording a game-high five shots, including three on goal.

Jaaskelainen then posted his second hat trick of the season with a three-goal explosion in the opening half en route to registering a season-best and game-high 12 shots, including five on net. He found the back of the net at the 9:22 and 11:47 marks, before scoring the game-winning tally in the 29th minute (28:53).

His 14 goals and 34 points on the campaign lead the NCAA this season. Jaaskelainen has now scored a goal in three straight games and five of his last six contests. He has netted a goal in three of four BIG EAST games this season, while earning the assist on the game-winning goal from senior Malik Henry (Hamilton, Ontario) in a 1-0 victory at Georgetown.

On the year, Jaaskelainen owns team-high marks in goals (14), assists (6), points (34), shots (63), shots on goal (29) and game-winners (4).

The Zips return to action on Saturday (Oct. 19) with a 3 p.m. ET showdown at DePaul.
