Second-Half Rally Lifts Bowling Green Past Akron, 70-59

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball team went into halftime tied 27-27 with Bowling Green, but could not pull away in the second half and fell 70-59 to the Falcons on Wednesday (Jan. 17).
The Zips had four players score in double figures, led by junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio), who had 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) added 12 points and two blocks, while sophomore Lanae Riley (Akron, Ohio) chipped in with 11 points off the bench.
Led by junior Alexus Mobley's (Indianapolis, Ind.) three offensive rebounds, Akron did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in nine second-chance points.
How It Happened
Akron started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Haney, to take an early lead with 9:03 left in the first quarter. The Zips then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 23-18 advantage. Akron relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 23 points.
The Falcons outscored Zips in the second quarter and the two teams entered halftime with the score tied 27-27.
After intermission, Bowling Green snatched a 30-27 lead before Akron answered back by going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Haney, to grab a 32-30 lead with 8:33 to go in the third. Bowling Green responded to seize a 51-43 lead entering the fourth quarter. Akron's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team's 16 third-quarter points.
Bowling Green extended its lead in the fourth, constructing a 59-47 advantage before Akron went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Bass' layup, to shrink the deficit to 59-55 with 2:14 to go in the contest. Bowling Green responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 70-59. Akron took advantage of three Bowling Green turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
