Akron Falls 59-57 at Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University of Akron women's basketball team's fourth-quarter rally came up just short as Buffalo edged the Zips, 59-57, on the road on Saturday (Jan. 13).
The Zips had two players score in double figures, led by junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio), who recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a 15-point and 14-rebound performance. Sophomore Lanae Riley (Akron, Ohio) tacked on 12 points and two blocks from the bench, while redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) added eight points, four assists and two steals. Additionally, junior Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ohio) added nine points on a trio of three pointers.
Led by Bass' four offensive rebounds, Akron did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in 18 second-chance points.
Akron disrupted numerous Buffalo shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Bass' two rejections led the way individually for the Zips.
How It Happened
Akron started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run, culminating in a three from Rasheed, to take an early lead with 8:59 left in the first quarter. The two teams battled the remainder of the quarter before the Bulls ended the stanza up by one, 18-17.
The Zips struggled offensively to open the second quarter and faced a 30-24 halftime deficit.
Akron was outscored by one, 13-12, in the third quarter and trailed 43-36 heading to the fourth quarter. Akron played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 12 points in the paint.
Buffalo constructed a 51-41 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Riley's three, to shrink the deficit to 51-46 with 4:58 to go in the contest. The Zips kept their comeback going, including senior Alexis Stewart (Hamilton, Ontario) hitting a triple with 24 seconds remaining to inch Akron within one, 56-55, but Buffalo managed to hold on for the 59-57 win. Akron fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 21 points.
