AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball team officially kicked off practice for its upcoming 2023-24 campaign on Monday (Sept. 25), as the Zips hit the floor at James A. Rhodes Arena for the first time.
Entering his first season as head coach, Ryan Gensler, boasts a talented mix of returners to go along with nine newcomers for an Akron squad that will kick off its campaign hosting Oakland on Nov. 6 at the JAR.
"There is nothing like the first official day of practice," said Gensler. "It is a thrill to finally put together everything we've been building throughout the summer and fall. Today was a productive practice and I can't wait to see us grow together daily."
Â
Junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio), a 2022-23 Mid-American Conference First-Team honoree, averaged 17.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest a year ago, both team-high marks, headlines the returning players for the Zips. Akron will also be bolstered by seniors Tahmala Thorpe (Mississauga, Ontario) and Alexis Stewart (Hamilton, Ontario), junior Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind.) and sophomore Annie Watson (Akron, Ohio), who all return for the Zips this season.
Â
Gensler and his staff have assembled a talented newcomer class that includes redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio), juniors Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Kaia Woods (Tiffin, Ohio), sophomores Lanae Riley (Akron, Ohio) and Liisa Taponen (Tampere, Finland) and freshmen Olivia Brown (Fishers, Ind.), Teniesha Clarke (Burlington, Ontario), Leila Jones (Westerville, Ohio) and Dacia Lewandowski (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
