Zips Set to Compete in Pair of Weekend Races

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's and women's cross country squads continue their fall campaign taking part in a pair of meets on Friday (Sept. 15). The Zips' men's squad will travel to Bowling Green, Ohio for the Mel Brodt Collegiate Open hosted by Bowling Green, while the Akron women's team visits Cedarville, Ohio for the All-Ohio Cross Country Championships hosted by Cedarville.

The Mel Brodt Collegiate Open will commence with the men's 8K race at 5:30 p.m. p.m. Joining Akron in the overall field will be Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Saginaw Valley, Toledo and Western Michigan.

The All-Ohio Cross Country Championships will kick off with the men's 8K at 6 p.m. before the women's 6K is contested at 6:40 p.m. The 31-team field includes; Akron, Ashland, Blufton, Capital, Case Western, Cedarville, Central State, Cleveland State, Findlay, Heidelberg, Hiram, John Carroll, Kenyon, Lake Erie, Lorain CC, Malone, Marietta, Mount Vernon Nazarene, Ohio Christian, Ohio Dominican, Ohio Northern, Ohio Wesleyan, Otterbein, Rio Grande, Ursuline, Walsh, Wilmington, Wittenberg, Wooster, Wright State and Xavier.

Akron freshman Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) captured the men's 6K title in a time of 17:54.99 to headline the Zips efforts at the 54th Annual Tommy Evans Invitational on Sept. 1 at Silver Creek Cross Country Park.
Leading Akron's efforts in the women's 5K with a career-best time of 18:16.68 was freshman Megan Hipple (Warren, Ohio).
The Zips placed second in the men's team race, while the Akron women finished third in the women's field.
Freshman Timothy Chesondin (Eldorat, Kenya) and redshirt senior Chase Easterling (Mt. Orab, Ohio) added top-10 finishes in the men's race crossing the line second and seventh, respectively, in 18:05.83 and 18:39.97. Rounding out Akron's scoring efforts in times of 19:14.17 and 19:22.43 was freshman Zayd Elkurd (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and junior Kyle Stober (Mogadore, Ohio).
Juniors Halle Sebest (Poland, Ohio) and Danielle Honaker (Ashland, Ohio), redshirt junior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Emily Razo (Salem, Ohio) led the Zips' scoring performances in the women's field crossing the line in 18:35.77, 18:53.43, 19:11.76 and 19:21.26, respectively.
