Garretson Earns Runner-Up Finish to Headlines Akron's Efforts on Day One of NCAA Track and Field Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Akron redshirt sophomore Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) garnered First-Team All-America accolades with a runner-up performance in the men's pole vault to headline the Zips' efforts on the opening night of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Texas on Wednesday (June 7).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Garretson collected All-America honors for the third time pulling in first-team honors with a second-place performance in the men's pole vault. He opened the competition eclipsing 17-4.50 (5.30m) on his second attempt before surpassing 17-10.50 (5.45m) on his third and final attempt. Garretson then bettered 18-4.50 (5.60m) and 18-8.25 (5.70m) and his second run at both bars. He came up short on establishing a career-best mark of 19-0.25 (5.80m).
• Redshirt sophomore William Gross (Newfane, N.Y.) garnered Second-Team All-America accolades placing 16th in the men's hammer with a season-best mark of 221-3 (67.45m). He posted a better mark in each of his three attempts registering throws of 213-2 (64.99m), 215-1 (65.56m) and 221-3 (67.45m).
• Redshirt senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned Honorable Mention All-America laurels for the first time crossing the line in 46.71 in the semifinal round of the men's 400 meters.

Akron freshman Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) will compete in the men's 5,000 meters at 10:55 p.m. ET on Friday (June 9) to close out the campaign for the Zips.
