Akron Earns Split of Doubleheader vs. Ball State on Senior Day

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron softball team garnered a doubleheader split with Ball State on Senior Day at Lee R. Jackson Field on Saturday (April 29).
The Cardinals captured the opener, 6-1, before the Zips withstood a late charge to secure a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Akron broke open a scoreless contest in the second contest when freshman Brooke Sivek (Boerne, Texas) went first to third on a single to the pitcher from redshirt junior Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) before scoring on a throwing error in the bottom of the third inning.
Strong pitching from redshirt senior P Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) kept the Cardinals at bay before redshirt junior Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) belted a 2-1 offering over the fence in right field for her third home run of the season to give Akron a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Ball State plated a run in its last at-bat before Otani induced a pop out to end the game a secure the victory.
Otani earned the decision on the strength of registering a trio of strikeouts, while five different Zips collected hits in the tilt.
The Cardinals played long ball in the opener as Ball State hammered six solo home runs en route to victory.
Akron garnered its lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Alexis Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.).
Redshirt senior P Alexa DiFeo (Akron, Ohio) recorded three strikeouts for the Zips.
Following the game Akron honored its eight graduating seniors as Carley Auten (Pickerington, Ohio), Jaiden Bryant (Hilliard, Ohio), DeVoe, DiFeo, Shelby Fortune (LaGrange, Ohio), McChesney, Otani and Katelyn Reynolds (Cincinnati, Ohio) were recognized.
