BOXSCORE (PDF)
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron softball team dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Ball State in the series finale between the two squads on Sunday (April 30) at Lee R. Jackson Field.
The Zips remain alive for the final berth in the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament despite the setback as Akron travels to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for a three-game series beginning on Friday (May 5).
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the affair with a two-out tally in the first inning before the Zips nearly squared the contest at one in their half of the frame as a bang-bang play at the plate went in Ball State's favor.
An RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning by redshirt junior Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) knotted the game at one.
The Cardinals regained the lead, 3-1, in the third inning before RBI singles from sophomore Alexis Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) and redshirt junior Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) again squared the tilt.
Each side scored a run in the fifth inning, with the Zips leaving runners on the table in their half of the frame as Ball State got out of a bases-loaded one-out jam.
A single down the line in left field in the sixth inning scored what proved to be the winning run for the Cardinals.
DeVoe and redshirt junior Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) each finished the contest 2-for-3 at the plate, with McChesney scoring a pair of runs.
