A Pair of Big Innings Allows CMU to Take 2-0 Series Advantage

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips couldn't overcome a pair of high scoring innings by the visiting Central Michigan Chippewas in the second game of the series as CMU claimed a 16-5 decision at Skeeles Field on Saturday
Akron leadoff hitter, sophomore OF Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio), sent the first pitch of the game over the left field wall to give Akron a 1-0 advantage. Senior 3B Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) followed with a single, but didn't cross the plate.
Central Michigan countered with a two-run blast in the top of the second inning. The Chippewas (24-13, 12-5 MAC) tacked on eight runs on five hits in the top of the third frame for an early 10-1 lead. The Zips held the Chippewa bats silent until the eighth inning when CMU plated a run.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Zips (14-24, 6-14 MAC) scattered 6-of-8 hits around the yard to generate four runs, cutting the deficit to 11-5. Junior DH Jack Poist (Hoover, ala.) led-off the inning with a single, while junior OF Sam Seeker (Norton, Ohio), junior 2B Breydan Cavey (Medina, Ohio), senior SS Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas), sophomore IF Ty Stolarski (Medina, Ohio), freshman C Ethan Schimony (State College, Pa.) all delivered base hits. Seeker, Hara, Stolarski and Schimony drove runs across the plate.
Central Michigan responded with a three-run homerun and RBI triple for five runs in the ninth to increase the advantage to 16-5.
