Akron Falls at Cleveland State, 71-62

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball team got a team-high 18 points from junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio), but fell 71-62 to Cleveland State on the road Sunday (Dec. 10).
The Zips had two players score in double figures, led Bass, who had her fifth double-double of the the year with an 18-point and 18-rebound performance. Junior Kaia Woods (Tiffin, Ohio) added a career-high 14 points off the bench, while sophomore Liisa Taponen (Tampere, Finland) contributed a career-best eight points and six rebounds.
Bass pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Akron, grabbing 10 boards and turning them into 10 second-chance points.
Akron did a great job disrupting Cleveland State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Bass' two rejections led the way individually for the Zips.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-4, Akron went on a 7-0 run with 4:26 left in the first quarter to narrow its deficit to 16-11. The Zips continued to close the gap, cutting the Cleveland State lead to 20-19 by the end of the first period.
The Zips continued to battle in the second quarter, but faced a 34-30 halftime deficit.
Cleveland State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 47-37 advantage before Akron went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Bass, to trim its deficit to 47-43 with 1:40 to go in the third. Cleveland State countered and stretched its lead to 54-46 heading into the fourth. Akron played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
Cleveland State constructed a 66-56 advantage before Akron went on a 6-0 run, finished off by sophomore Lanae Riley's (Akron, Ohio) jumper, to shrink the deficit to 66-62 with 1:07 to go in the contest. Cleveland State responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 71-62. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
