Four Zips Garner All-BIG EAST Men's Soccer Accolades

ALL-BIG EAST MEN'S SOCCER POSTSEASON AWARDS RELEASE
NEW YORK – A quartet of University of Akron men's soccer standouts garnered All-BIG EAST accolades when the league unveiled in 2023 award winners in a vote of the league coaches released on Tuesday (Nov. 7).
Junior Jason Shokalook (Erie, Pa.) headlined the Zips' award winners as he named selected as the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year and was a unanimous First-Team honoree.
Pulling in Second-Team All-BIG EAST laurels were juniors Jonas Buechte (Rantigen, Germany) and Malik Henry (Hamilton, Ontario), while senior Alejandro Varela (A Coruna, Spain) earned Third-Team honors.
Shokalook becomes the 13th Zip to garner league Player of the Year accolades and first since Adam Najem in 2016.
He has started all 17 games he has appeared in for Akron this season, owning team-high marks in in goals (10), points (21), shots (52), shots on goal (26) and game-winners (2).
Shokalook ranks first in the BIG EAST in goals (0.82), points (1.94) and shots (4.88) per game as well as leading the league in total goals (14), shots (83) and points (33). In league-only affairs, Shokalook led the BIG EAST in total shots (43), as well as shots (5.38) per contest, while standing second in total goals (6), total points (15) and goals (0.75) and points (1.88) per contest and seventh in assists per tilt (0.43).
Individually, Shokalook is first in the NCAA in total points (33), second in shots per outing (4.88) and in shots on goal per match (2.41), third in total goals (14), fourth in points per tilt (1.94), fifth in goals per game (0.82) and 38th in game-winning goals (3).
Buechte and Henry help spearhead Akron's defensive efforts this season that resulted in a league-best 10 shutouts and a 0.56 goals against average.
Buechte has started all 18 games for the Zips this season owning three assists on the strength of eight shots, including four on goal.
Henry has appeared in 14 games for Akron on the campaign, including 13 starts, and has posted four assists on nine shots, with six strikes coming on net.
Varela has played in 17 matches for the Zips this fall, including 13 starts, recording a goal, a game-winner, on 15 shots, including eight on goal.
