Oakland Edges Akron, 91-87, in Double Overtime

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball team fell to the Oakland, 91-87, in two overtimes in the season opener for both squads on Monday (Nov. 6) at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Zips (0-1) had three players score in double figures, led by junior F Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio), who notched a double-double with a career-high 33-point and 13-rebound performance. Redshirt senior G Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) added a career-best 21 points, six rebounds and four assists, while junior G Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) chipped in as well with 10 points.
Led by Bass' four offensive rebounds, Akron did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 12 second-chance points.
The Akron defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 21 Oakland turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Junior G Kaia Woods' (Tiffin, Ohio) three steals led the way individually for the Zips.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-4, Akron went on a 7-0 run with 5:28 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Haney, to take an 11-9 lead. Oakland then responded to tie things up at 17-17 heading into the second quarter.
The Golden Grizzlies took control in the second quarter outscoring Akron, 18-13, to enter halftime leading, 35-30.
Akron's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Zips faced a 53-46 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
Akron narrowed its deficit to 70-64 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Mobley's layup, to even the score at 70 all with eight seconds to go in the fourth to force overtime. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 24 points in the paint.
The Zips took the game to a second overtime before Oakland ultimately prevailed by a final score of 91-87.
