Akron Posts 77-51 Exhibition Win Against Walsh

AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron women's basketball junior F Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) notched a double-double with a 23-point and 12-rebound performance to help the Zips take down Walsh, 77-51, in exhibition action on Thursday (Nov. 2) at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Zips had two players score in double figures, led by Bass, while junior G Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind.) tacked on 17 points and four steals off the bench and redshirt senior G Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) added nine points and three steals.
Akron pulled down 37 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Walsh's 31, led by Bass' 12 boards.
The Akron defense held Walsh shooters to just 31 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-2, Akron went on a 21-0 run with 7:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from sophomore C Liisa Taponen (Tampere, Finland), to take a 23-4 lead. The Zips entered the quarter break with a 25-9 advantage. Akron did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 25 points close to the basket.
Akron kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 6:16 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from junior G Kaia Woods (Tiffin, Ohio), to increase its lead to 34-15. The Cavaliers cut into that lead, but the Zips still enjoyed a 35-27 advantage heading into halftime. Akron dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 10 points close to the basket.
Akron wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a three from Rasheed, to expand its lead further to 45-27 with 5:51 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Cavaliers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Zips still entered the fourth quarter with a 51-40 edge. Akron's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team's 16 third-quarter points.
Akron kept widening that lead, expanding it to 63-51 before going on a 14-0 run, finished off by Rasheed's layup, to grow the lead to 77-51 with 31 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Akron took advantage of eight Walsh turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of those takeaways.
