Zips Fly the Flag in Shutout Victory over Michigan State

AKRON, Ohio – The 10th-rated University of Akron men's soccer team notched a 2-0 shutout triumph past Michigan State (1-3-0) on Monday, Sept. 5, at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The Zips (4-0-0) garnered a 12th minute (11:29) goal from junior Johnny Fitzgerald (Tallahassee, Fla.) and an 84th minute (83:07) strike from sophomore Jason Shokalook (Erie, Pa.) en route to the victory. Freshman goalkeeper Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) made a trio of saves for Akron to collect the first clean sheet of the season for the Zips.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Zips assumed a lead they didn't relinquish at the 11:29 mark of the opening half when sophomore Gyuwon Chong (Kansas City, Mo.) intercepted a pass in the Spartans' defensive third and found a streaking Fitzgerald, who capitalized with his team-leading third goal of the year.
• Akron maintained a 1-0 lead at halftime on the strength of outshooting Michigan State, 4-3, including 3-1 on goal.
• The Zips continued to work their opportunities in the second half as the squad registered a 12-6 edge in second-half shots, including 5-2 on frame.
• Akron was able to capitalize in the 84th minute (83:07) as sophomore Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal (Carbondale, Ill.) delivered a strike into the box off a corner kick that Shokalook headed past the Michigan State goalkeeper for his team-best third goal on the campaign.
• The Zips posted a 16-9 margin in shots in the match, including 8-3 on goal, and were led by a game-high three shots apiece from sophomore Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah) and Shokalook.

Akron travels to Bloomington, Ind., for a showdown with No. 11 Indiana on Friday, Sept. 9. The contest will air on BTN+ starting at 8 p.m.
