AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams travel to California this week as the Zips will compete in a quartet of meets across Southern California.

Akron's middle-distance runners will commence competition for the Zips competing in at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif., on Thursday and Friday, April 14-15.

The three-day event will kick off on Wednesday, April 13, with the 100 meters as part of the women's heptathlon at 11 a.m. ET before the meet concludes with the men's and women's 1,500 meters on Friday evening

The Zips then will split their efforts between the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (April 14) and Beach Invitational (April 15-16) hosted by Long Beach State along with the Mt. Sac Relays (April 13-16) hosted by Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

The running of the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays, which is in its 62nd year, opens for the Zips with the women's 100-meter hurdles at 2:35 p.m. ET on Friday and concludes with the women's 200 meters at 7:30 p.m. ET. Competition resumes on Saturday with the men's 4x400 relay squad running in the invitational relay at 8:10 p.m. ET.

The men's hammer at 11 a.m. ET will start the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Thursday with the final event being the men's 4x400 relay at 8:50 p.m. ET.

The Beach Invitational begins on Friday for Akron with the men's hammer at 12 p.m. ET, before the meet concludes opening-day action with the men's javelin at 6:45 p.m. ET. The final day of the competitions opens with the men's high jump at 12 p.m. ET, before action on the track rounds out with the men's 200 meters at 9:03 p.m. ET.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams have garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2022 outdoor season as the Zips are rated in the Event Squad rankings released on April 11, 2022, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index.

Akron is ranked sixth nationally in the men's men's hammer as well as rating 20th in the women's 400-meter hurdles.

The Akron men and women are ranked ninth and 11th, respectively, in the latest Great Lakes Regional polls.

ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2022 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has three student-athletes currently ranked in the top-30 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2022 outdoor campaign, led by junior Jacqueline Pokuaah (Akron, Ohio), who is fifth in the nation in the women's triple jump (44-4.75/13.53m).

Additionally, freshman Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) is 12th in the men's pole vault (17-6.50/5.35m) and senior Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) is 12th in the men's triple jump (50-11/15.52m).

CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: Sophomore Zarik Brown (Dayton, Ohio) posted Akron's lone top-five performances in program history at the Northeast Ohio Tri-Meet on April 2. He recorded the fifth-fastest effort in the men's 400 meters crossing the line in 46.85.

GARRETSON NAMED MAC MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
Hunter Garretson was honored by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on April 6.
Â
Garretston was recognized by the league for the second consecutive week and second time overall this season. Overall, the Zips picked up weekly conference accolades for eighth time, respectively, in 2022.

Garretson captured the men's pole vault at the Northeast Ohio Tri-Meet on April 2 eclipsing 17-5.50 (5.32m). He owns the No. 1 mark in the MAC this season (17-6.50/5.35m) and No. 10 effort in the NCAA this spring.

Akron returns to competition traveling to California to partake in the Mt. Sac Relays, Bryan Clay Invitational, Pacific Coast Intercollegiate and Beach Invitational, April 13-16.
