Four Zips Score in Double Figures as Akron Advances to MAC Tournament Semifinals

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The third-seeded University of Akron women's basketball parlayed a balanced scoring attack led by a game-high 22-point performance from senior Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W.Va.), the 2021-22 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, into an 81-67 victory past sixth-seeded Bowling Green (15-15) in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament on Wednesday, March 9 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

The Zips (17-10) advance to the MAC Tournament semifinals to square off against second-seeded Buffalo in the second semifinal game on Friday, March 11. The showdown will follow thirty minutes after the conclusion of the tilt between top-seeded Toledo and fifth-seeded Ball State, which begins at 10 a.m.

Dawson paced four Zips scoring in double-figures and finished the game with a 22-point, seven-rebound and six-steal performance. Freshman Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Layne Ferrell (Franklin, Ohio) and junior Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) added 16,14 and 11 points, respectively. Amy Velasco directed three Bowling Green players in double figures with a team-high 19 points.

Akron finished the game shooting nearly 52 percent (.518) from the field, while connecting on 5-of-10 shots from beyond the arc. The Falcons wrapped up the evening shoot nearly 42 percent (.418) from the field and at a 42.1 percent clip from distance.

The Zips posted advantages in the contest in points in the paint (40-30), fast-break points (18-8), points off turnovers (17-12) and bench points (18-9).

TOURNAMENT NOTES:
• Akron registered its first MAC Tournament victory since besting Toledo, 73-71, in the quarterfinals of the 2016 MAC Tournament on March 9, 2016.
• The Zips improved to 2-1 all-time against Bowling Green at the MAC Tournament registering their first victory over the Falcons since a 74-56 triumph on Feb. 26, 1999.
• Akron advances to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign.
