Cleveland, Ohio – The Akron women's basketball team championship run at the 2022 Mid-American Conference Tournament came to an end as the Zips fell 82-43 to the second-seeded Buffalo Bulls in the semifinal round on Friday afternoon.
Â
Akron was led in scoring by senior Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W Va.) and freshman Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) with 15- and 12-points, respectively. Dawson, the 2022 MAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, shot 6-of-15 from the floor, including Akron's only made 3-pointer on a 1-of-2 effort. She added a team-best three steals and grabbed a second-best five rebounds. Bass connected on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 performance from the free throw line. Bass led the team on the glass with six rebounds.
Â
Akron opened the game battling the Bulls toe-to-toe as a Dawson layin with 3:05 remaining in the first quarter kept the Zips within two points, 12-10, until Buffalo outscored the Zips 8-2 to close out the quarter. The Zips cut the deficit to three points, 22-19, at the 8:17 mark of the second stanza when Buffalo tallied six-straight points before the half ended for its largest lead of that point, 32-21. The Bulls defense limited the Zips to shooting 9-of-32 from the field, including an 1-of-11 mark from deep. Akron's shooting woes continued as the Zips finished the game shooting 16-of-62 from the field and 1-of-19 from deep with a 10-of-12 showing from the charity stripe.
Â
The Bulls were paced by Dyaisha Fair with a game-high 28 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the floor. Georgia Woolley added an 8-of-15 shooting performance and finished with 20 points as the Bulls shot 50.8 percent from the floor (32-of-63), including a 50-percent performance from downtown (7-of-14). The Bulls edged the Zips on the glass 44-33.
Â
After a successful 2022 campaign, the Zips are optimistic their body of work has earned Akron a postseason berth. The Zips will learn their postseason fate late on Sunday evening, March 13.
