KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Akron women's basketball team (10-8, 7-5 MAC) avenged their loss to the Broncos a week ago with a dominant offensive performance en route to an 86-70 victory on Wednesday night at University Arena.
After the Zips built a 26-point lead midway through the third quarter, the Broncos closed within nine in the final quarter, but Akron put the foot on the gas and claimed the victory thanks to a three-pointer by junior Rachel Martindale and clutch free-throw shooting from freshman Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) to put the Zips back up by double-digits. In between, the Akron defense limited Western Michigan to 4-of-12 (33.3) percent shooting and held the Broncos to a 2:12 scoring drought in the final minutes of the game en route to the 86-70 victory.
Redshirt senior Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W Va.) paced the Zips' efforts recording her ninth double-double of the season with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Bass recorded 20 points, six rebounds, and dished out two assists, while junior  Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) rounded out the double-figure scoring with 11 points.
The Zips 'offense succeeded largely because of their hot shooting, going 33-of-53 (62.3 percent) from the floor, and 52.9 percent (9-of-17), but also the entire lineup dished out dimes all night long, assisting on an impressive 21-of-34 baskets.
Akron saw seven Zips score in the second quarter showing off strong ball movement that led to six assists as a team. With the Zips' offense in full swing, Akron outscored Western Michigan 26-11 in the second quarter and held the Broncos scoreless for the final two minutes of the second stanza with the help of a 9-3 run. The run saw a three-pointer and layup from sophomore Annika Corcoran (Painesville, Ohio) and layups from Brewer and Bass.
Despite the Broncos' attempt for a late surge, the Zips trailed for just 19 seconds in the game and earned their seventh MAC win of the season. Thanks to a strong defensive effort by Akron, Western Michigan shot 40.4 percent and outside of the middle stretch of the third quarter, couldn't sustain any real offensive momentum on the evening.
Akron returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 12 as the Zips travel to Eastern Michigan. Tip time is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans can watch the game on ESPN 3 and listen to it on 640 WHLO AM. Live stats are available at GoZips.com
