YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Akron women's basketball team earned its second-straight road victory of the week as the Zips earned the season sweep over Eastern Michigan in a 64-53 victory on Saturday afternoon at the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
Â
The Zips (11-8, 8-5 MAC) went on to win their second-straight league game, suffocating the offense of Eastern Michigan in a 64-53 win that saw Akron trail for just over six minutes of game time. With nine players seeing court time and eight of them scoring points, it was a balanced offensive effort for the Zips, but defense is where they did their best work.
Â
Akron limited Eastern Michigan to 28-percent shooting, including just three made 3-pointers, forced 12 turnovers, scoring 16 points off the Eagles' miscues.
Â
Redshirt senior Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W Va.) led the Zips with 22 points, eight rebounds, and three steals, while junior Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) rounded out the double-figure scoring with 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Annika Corcoran (Painesville, Ohio) added eight points, five rebounds, and dished out a team-high four assists. Â
Â
It was Corcoran and junior Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) who each drained a pair of 3-pointers each, helping create spacing on the floor for Brewer and Dawson to operate in the paint, as the Zips scored 30 points in the paint.
Â
A 13-3 run midway through the second quarter allowed the Zips to turn a three-point deficit into an eight-point lead (27-19) that grew to nine moments later. Brewer and Martindale's pinpoint shooting from the perimeter fueled the run as two 3-pointers gave the Akron offense a boost. EMU closed the Zips lead to four, 30-26 after using a 5-0 run with 1:30 left, but Akron answered back with a pair of free throws by Dawson and a Corcoran three that extended the Zips' lead to 35-26 before the Eagles closed the half with a jumper sending Akron into the break with a 35-28 lead.
Â
The Eagles got the Zips' lead within four (40-36) in the third quarter, but that was as close as EMU would get to Akron for the remainder of the game. A driving layup by Dawson in the fourth quarter put Akron ahead by 11 (57-46), and the Zips would go on to secure the 64-53 victory.
Â
Eastern Michigan had three players score in double-figures with Ce'Nara Skanes leading the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
The Zips will return home as Akron hosts Central Michigan on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at James A. Rhodes Arena for their Equality and Inclusion game. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
