AKRON, Ohio- Facing a 13-point deficit midway through the second quarter, the Akron Zips didn't get angry, they got even – and then some. By the time they completed their massive turnaround, it was the visiting Central Michigan Chippewas who were in a 13-point hole, with Akron claiming a 67-54 win in Mid-American Conference action Wednesday evening at James A. Rhodes Arena to extend their winning streak to three games.
The turnaround began with redshirt senior forward Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W Va.) willing her way to the hoop for a layup with 6:07 remaining in the second quarter, absorbing contact and getting the bucket before draining the subsequent foul shot for an and-1.
The sequence sparked a 14-0 run over the next 4:12, putting the Zips (12-8, 9-5 MAC) in front for the first time since the opening moments of the game. Buoyed by the spurt, they outscored the Chippewas 54-28 over the final 26:07 of game time.
In addition to a monster double-double by Dawson with 29 points and 13 rebounds to go with four steals, the Akron defense was the main force in turning the tide. With 12 forced turnovers, nine steals and three blocked shots, the Zips were aggressive on the defensive end and harassed the visitors into 33.3-percent shooting.
On offense, foul shots kept Akron going in the first three quarters and they outscored Central Michigan 13-6 from the line in the contest. That set up the knockout punch in the fourth quarter as the Zips drained 4-of-8 from 3-point range to close out the victory.
Four different Zips hit from beyond the arc in the period and the Chippewas (4-20, 2-13 MAC) could not mount a serious rally. In addition to Dawson's big night, freshman forward Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) had a solid outing with 16 points and six rebounds, while junior forward Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) snared nine rebounds to go with her five points.
Senior forward Jahari Smith led Central Michigan with 18 points in the loss and freshman guard Lisa Tesson added 11.
The game begins a rare three-game MAC homestand for Akron, which hosts rival Kent State for the final installment of the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge battle on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. after winning in Kent earlier this season. Saturday's game will also serve as the Zips' Akron for Nakon game. The contest raises funds for the Nakon Foundation to support those suffering from breast cancer, honor the survivors of all cancers, and educate the community.
Tune in on 99.7-FM to hear the action as the Zips look to sweep their season series with the Golden Flashes.
