Record-Setting DMR Highlights Zips’ Efforts on Day One of Akron Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's distance medley relay squad of seniors Hannah Long (Pacific, Mo.) and Varvara Lissichkina (Karaganda, Kazahstan), sophomore Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) and freshman Beth Arentz (Cronulla, Australia) ran a school-record time of 11:33.91 to headline the Zips' efforts on the opening day of the 18th Annual Akron Invitational on Friday, Feb. 4, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The women's DMR of Long, Lissichkina, Heimlich and Arentz captured the event in a school-record time of 11:33.91. It bettered the mark of 11:37.61 set in 2019 by senior Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio), Iman Batiste, Victoria Stachowski and Mackenzie Andrews.
• Junior Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) parlayed a strong finish to capture the women's pentathlon for the second time in her decorated Akron career on the strength of a five-event cumulative score of 3,602. Foster posted career-best marks in the shot put (33-6/10.21m) and in the final event of the night, the 800 meters (2:18.54), en route to earning the victory. Freshmen Grace Henderson (Rostraver Township, Pa.) and Kayla Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) registered career-best totals of 3,066 and 2,712 to place sixth and seventh, respectively.
• Freshman Jacob Glavickas (Orwell, Ohio) stands in fourth place in the men's heptathlon after day-one competition with a four-event cumulative score of 2,495.
• Freshman Fegor Clifford (Delta State, Nigeria) and junior Jacqueline Pokuaah (Akron, Ohio) took the top-two spots in the women's blue division long jump registering marks of 19-0 (5.79m) and 18-11.25 (5.77m), respectively.
• Scarton and freshman Danielle Honaker (Ashland, Ohio) placed second and third, respectively, in the women's gold division 5,000 meters in times of 17:20.75 and 18:19.21.
UP NEXT
The final day of the 18th Annual Akron Invitational at the Stile Athletics Field House commences on Saturday, Feb. 5, with the women's high jump and triple and men's triple jump at 11 a.m., as well as the 60-meter hurdles as part of the men's heptathlon. The final race, the men's and women's 4x400 relays are scheduled to start at 5:35 p.m.
