AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's soccer team will face a challenging spring exhibition schedule, one that includes three matches at FirstEnergy Stadium, Zips' 10th-year head coach Jared Embick announced on Monday.
Akron is set to return seven starters in 2022, including 2021 All-Mid-American Conference performers, sophomores Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah) and Malik Henry (Hamilton, Ontario) and junior Ryan Kingsford (Herne Bay, England), from a squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 34th time in program history.
Akron will take part in the third-year College Spring League this spring and face divisional rivals Cleveland State (March 6), Michigan (March 13) and Bowling Green (April 10). Cross-divisional opponents include Dayton, Louisville, Marshall and Ohio State with all eight teams converging on Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus as part of Championship Saturday on April 16.
The exhibition games are part of the squad's non-championship spring season with results and statistics not counting towards NCAA play.
Akron opens its spring slate battling Athlete Institute, a Canadian club team, in an exhibition contest at the Schrank Practice Field on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 10:30 a.m.
The Zips then commence the month of March traveling to Cleveland to square off versus Cleveland State and Akron City FC on Sunday, March 6. Game times at the Dome at Krenzler Field are set for 3 and 6 p.m., respectively.
