Seven Zips Garner All-Ohio Men’s Soccer Honors

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's soccer squad was well represented when the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association unveiled its 2022 All-Ohio men's soccer selections as sophomore Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah), juniors Will Jackson (Hudson, Ohio) and Joel Sangwa (Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore Jason Shokalook (Erie, Pa.) were honored as first-team selections.
Additionally, juniors Johnny Fitzgerald (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Ryan Kingsford (Herne Bay, England) and senior Sam Tojaga (Erie, Pa.) were recognized as First-Team Academic All-Ohio recipients.
This season, Clapier became the 45th Akron player to garner United Soccer Coaches All-America accolades and first since former teammate Diogo Pacheco earned Third-Team All-America honors in 2021.
The United Soccer Coaches All-America citation is the 61st in the Zips' storied men's soccer history.
Clapier earlier garnered first-team regional accolades for the first time, after starting all 18 games he appeared in for Akron this fall en route to leading the team in assists (7), shots (38) and game-winners (3), while ranking second in goals (7), points (21) and shots on goal (19). Clapier rated third in the MAC in assists (.389), goals (.389), points (1.17) and game-winners (.167), fifth in shots on goal (1.06) and sixth in shots (2.11). In league-only games, he ranked fourth in assists (.625), sixth in points (1.13) and eighth in shots (1.63) per tilt.
A team captain, Jackson started 16 of the 18 games he appeared in for Akron this past season. He helped direct a Zips' defensive unit that posted seven shutouts on the campaign, while adding three goals, four assists and a pair of game-winning goals on the strength of 24 shots, including seven on goal.
Sangwa provided an immediate impact on the Zips in his first season at Akron starting all 20 games to help spark the squad's defensive unit to seven shutouts. He tallied four goals on the strength of eight shots, including four on goal, while netting a pair of game-winning goals.
Having started 17 of the 18 games he appeared in for Akron this fall, Shokalook posted team-best marks in goals (9), points (24), shots (38) and shots on goal (22), while ranking second in assists (6) and game-winners (2). He ranked second in the MAC in goals (.500), points (1.33) and shots on goal (1.22), while rating sixth in shots (2.11), seventh in assists (.333) per contest and ninth in game-winners (.111). In league-only matches, he ranked first, second, second, second and seventh, respectively, in goals (.500), points (1.38), shots (2.50), shots on goal (1.38) and assists (.375) per outing.
Having appeared in all 20 games for Akron, including 16 starts, Fitzgerald elevated his game to another level this season en route to collecting Second-Team All-MAC honors for the first time. He has posted four goals, while adding an assist on the strength of 24 shots, including 12 on goal and one game-winning tally.
Kingsford played in all 20 games for the Zips, including four starts, and rated third on the squad in goals (5), assists (5), points (15) and shots (24) and fourth in shots on goal (10). He ranked ninth in the MAC in goals per game (.250), while rating seventh in league-only affairs in assists (.375) and ninth in points (0.88).
A team captain, Tojaga appeared in 12 games for Akron, including 11 starts, and recorded seven shots, including four on goal.
