COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 10th-rated University of Akron rifle team battled No. 5 Murray State down to the final round before the Racers edged the Zips in the final standings, 4697-4691.
For the second week in a row, sophomore Alexis Kirk (Clarence Center, N.Y.) showed that she has what it takes to be a champion shattering her personal-best score by a full six points establishing a new mark of 588 out of the possible 600. Kirk's performance earned her the top-gun honors for the match in smallbore. Teammates redshirt senior Andre Gross (Webster, N.Y) 583), junior Gavin Perkowski (Bollivar, Ohio) (581) and freshman Andrew Duross (Marlborough, Mass.) 580) all combined with Kirk for a smallbore team total of 2332, which finished nine points ahead of Murray State.
Stepping up to the line with the air rifles, Akron did well, but Murray State was red hot and quickly grabbed the lead, while capturing the first three individual slots on the air rifle leader board. Perkowski finished fourth, and led the Zips with a 593 scorecard. Five other Zips fired in the 590's, but this was not enough to corral the Racers, who ended up pulling ahead of Akron by a slim margin of six points, 4691 to 4697.
"Our air rifle was good, but to be honest it was a little flat compared to past performances and how we have been training this past week," said Akron head coach Newt Engle. "I am betting in the upcoming week we will be making some very fine adjustments to get our edge back."
