MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The ninth-ranked University of Akron rifle team earned a hard-fought 4697-4674 victory over No. 13 Memphis on Saturday, Nov. 12.
In the smallbore, led by junior Gavin Perkowski (Bollivar, Ohio) (587), the Zips captured the top-five spots with all five scoring in the 580's. This gave Akron a victory in smallbore with the team score of 2338, which was one point off the school record.
"I was very pleased with this smallbore performance," Akron head coach Newt Engle commented. "It looks like all the hard work over the past few weeks is paying off."
Sophomore Alexis Kirk (Clarence Center, N.Y.) and freshman Andrew Duross (Marlborough, Mass.) paced Akron in the air rifle scoring in the 590's earning identical 592's, Akron could not match the prowess of Memphis, who took the division 2367-2359.
"This was an eye-opener for us coaches and the team," said Engle. "Clearly we have some work ahead of us with the air rifle. I have seen them perform at levels worthy of champions and I know we will figure out a way to make this happen again. When we do this and combine it with smallbore scores like today, amazing things will happen."
