AKRON, Ohio - The 10th-rated University of Akron rifle team battled in a tightly contested showdown with No. 7 Navy and No. 9 Air Force as part of Academy Weekend on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range as the Zips (4688) finished in the middle of the final standings between Air Force (4702) and Navy (4684).
On the smallbore range, when the smoke cleared, Akron stood atop the hill by outshooting both academies. Junior Gavin Perkowski (Bolivar, Ohio) tied his career-best smallbore score of 587 (out of the possible 600) to lead the Zips. Backed up by sophomore Alexis Kirk (Clarence Center, N.Y.) with an equally impressive 585. Freshman Rachel Engels (Meridian, Idaho) and fifth-year senior Andre Gross (Webster, N.Y.) each contributed a 580 to round out the top four for the Zips.
"In the smallbore division this team has really been nailing it," Akron head coach Newt Engle commented. "The consistency of our team and outstanding level of accuracy is demonstrating they have what it takes."
Engels established a career-high mark in the air rifle with an outstanding score of 595, while Kirk also jumped in the mix with a 592 score.
"We know now what we need to do over our winter break and I am betting every one of our team members will be dreaming of sugar plums as well as center ten's," said Engle.
Akron returns to competition on Jan. 14, as the squad will travel to Annapolis, Md., to meet up with Naval as well as Ole Miss for a three-way competition.Â
