Zips Fall to Winthrop and Virginia in Friday Action

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Akron volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches to Winthrop (3-0) and Virginia (3-2) on the opening day of the Virginia Tournament in Charlottesville, Va.

In the opening match of the doubleheader, the Zips hung tough against the Eagles in the final two sets, but Akron was unable to take a set as Winthrop claimed all three (24-18, 26-24, 25-23).

Senior Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) registered a .206 hitting percentage while leading the Zips' offense with nine kills on 34 attempts with two errors. Senior Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) and senior Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) both tallied double-figure digs with 10 and 14, respectively. Weigand also dished out a team-high 27 assists.

Akron fought hard in the nightcap forcing five sets but came up short against Virginia by scores of 25-16, 22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 12-15. Despite holding Virginia to a.139 hitting percentage, the Cavaliers out-blocked the Zips, 16-6.

Three Zips registered double-figure kills in Adleta with 13, senior Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) who tallied 11, and senior Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) who registered 10 kills. Sharrits recorded a match-high 19 digs, while Adleta led with 43 attacks.

Akron won the first after taking advantage of multiple unanswered runs and led by as many as nine points (20-11) late in the set. The Cavaliers' defensive efforts held Akron to a .000 hitting percentage for the second set and evened the match after winning, 25-22.

In the third set, Virginia took a 14-10 lead, but the Zips halted Virginia's 6-1 scoring run by closing out the set with a 5-0 run. Virginia grasped an early 15-9 lead in the fourth set en route to a 25-17 win.

Akron took an 8-3 lead in the final set, but the Cavaliers put together a 6-0 run to lead, 12-9. The Zips posted three unanswered points of their own to tie the set at 12 all. Virginia would then score the final three points and take the match.

The Zips return to action Saturday morning to close out the tournament with William and Mary at 11:30 a.m.
