Akron Falls to Maryland in Three Sets

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Akron volleyball team (6-4) lost to Maryland (10-0) Â at the XFINITY Arena on Friday evening by a final score of 11-25, 17-25, 16-25 on the opening day of the Maryland Challenge.

The Terps posted 42 kills on the match to the Zips' 30 and  held Akron to a .111 hitting percentage. Sophomore Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) led the Zips' efforts with 10 kills, while senior Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) paced the defense with 12 digs.

Maryland's 10-3 run in the opening set was too much to overcome. The Terps led by as many as 10 (20-10) late in the set. Johnson and senior Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) both posted three kills in the set.

Akron took an 11-8 lead in the middle of the second set, but Maryland would use an 8-2 run to take control of the second set and end on a 5-0 run to claim the No.2 25-17 victory.

The Zips had their best hitting percentage in the final set, finishing at .259 percent. The Zips would close the Terps' deficit to 12-10, but Maryland would take command of the set and used a late 7-2 run that put the set and match out of reach.

Akron will be back in action tomorrow to close out the Maryland Challenge. The Zips open the day with Columbia at 10:30 a.m. before closing out the day with Stony Brook at 4:30 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live on B1G+. Â Fans can also follow the action via live stats on GoZips.com.
