Zips Turn in Stellar Spring Semester in the Classroom

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron athletic teams shined in the classroom this past semester as its student-athletes rose to the challenge registering a banner 2020-21 academic year, one that saw the 17 Zips' squads posted a cumulative 3.399 GPA, including every team garnering a team GPA of 3.0 or better. The efforts of the Akron squads for the 2021 Spring Semester garnered a 3.418 GPA.

Women's golf earned a program-best 3.733 team GPA for the year, while cross country, rifle and women's soccer each eclipsed the 3.70 team GPA threshold registering marks of 3.733, 3.73, 3.723 and 3.70, respectively. Men's basketball and football added a GPA of 3.168 and 3.148.

Led by a program-leading 3.731 team GPA from rifle, six of Akron programs posted their highest single-semester GPA in the past 10 years, that list included football (3.212), women's soccer (3.708), softball (3.58), men's track and field (3.291), rifle (3.731) and lacrosse (3.545).

The excellence of the Zips in their academic studies in an online and hybrid learning environment was sparked by the efforts of the Academic Resource Center staff. The results were strikingly evident as more than 77 percent of Akron's student-athletes, 333 of 432, earned an individual GPA for the term of 3.0 or better, while more than 41 percent garnered a GPA of 3.50 or higher.

More than 11 percent (48) of the Zips' student-athletes, including seven from the football and women's swimming and diving teams and four each from the men's and women's soccer and softball squads, recorded unblemished 4.0 GPA's.

Additionally, 179 Akron student-athletes posted a GPA between 3.5-3.99, and 106 followed with individual GPA's in the 3.0-3.49 range, including the women's cross country, women's golf and rifle teams which saw all of their members register a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Football paced the combined list with 68 Zips earning between a 3.0-3.99. They were followed by men's track and field (30), lacrosse (28), swimming and diving (26), men's soccer (25), women's soccer (25), baseball (24), softball (23), women's track and field (15), cross country (14), volleyball (14), rifle (13), women's basketball (12), men's basketball (10) and golf (6).
